Increase Access to Care

Children. Families. Care.

All children should have the chance to reach their greatest potential. Last year alone 1,894 clients received care from the dedicated staff at George Jeffrey Children's Centre. More and more children throughout Thunder Bay and the surrounding region are being referred to George Jeffrey for help with their physical, developmental and social needs. Specialized service needs for children are outpacing the government funding available for them. Support from our community is essential to the care available at George Jeffrey.

George Jeffrey Children's Centre is dedicated to doing even more for children and families throughout Northwestern Ontario by expanding access to its specialized care. This is being accomplished by boosting accessibility to current programs, enhancing services for children and families, and creating new capacity in order to impact more lives.

Many priority investments have been identified, including:

Assessment equipment for those who have difficulty communicating verbally or through written means - from tongue click switches to special cameras that help children navigate computer screens with their eyes
A large interactive touch and sound panel for the Snoezelen Room, which is the Centre's controlled multi-sensory environment
Light filters and adjustable tables for children, as part of accessibility and therapeutic updates to the Centre
A care coordination program to increase the time clinicians have with children and families, and open up more opportunities for children on the Centre's wait list
The production of educational videos to provide parents and caregivers with the tools they need to help their children succeed
A transportation program for families who struggle to get to the Centre for care
Adaptive bicycles to introduce children with special needs and their families to the possibilities of participating in this rewarding recreational activity
Expanded video capabilities so clinicians can connect with more children and caregivers in rural and remote areas
More consultation and education clinics so more children and families can have direct contact with clinicians
