Jordyn's journey at George Jeffrey Children's Centre (GJCC) began in 2003 at the young age of one. Jordyn's parents were told that she had a Genetic Disorder resembling Crouzon Syndrome; a genetic disorder characterized by the premature fusion of certain skull bones. This early fusion prevents the skull from growing normally and affects the shape of the head and face. Tests confirmed that it was not Crouzon Syndrome, but a rare undetermined genetic disorder. Jordyn's treatment plan at George Jeffrey Children's Centre included physio therapy and occupational therapy to assist her with eating, holding a pencil and working with a keyboard and computer so that she could adapt to using a computer in her regular routine at school.
Jordyn's speech was also delayed, so she worked with a Centre Speech Language Pathologist. Jordyn's parents attribute Linda Middaugh Vanstone, Jordyn's Speech Therapist for directing them to the proper resources that eventually resulted in Jordyn receiving the proper treatment and surgeries for her genetic disorder.
Jordyn's mother Shannon stated "The staff maintains communication with the family and with Jordyn's teachers and without the exceptional care and dedication of the staff at the George Jeffrey Children's Centre the outcome for Jordyn could have been much different."
Considering the surgeries and challenges that Jordyn has faced in her nine years, her achievements are nothing short of miracles. She continues to receive therapy at the Centre and also participates in the social skills group to help to develop healthy self-esteem. Jordyn is more confident than ever before and this vibrant, outgoing little girl loves sharing her successes and accomplishments!
This is what George Jeffrey Children's Centre is all about; being there for kids like Jordyn, literally every step of the way.
