Tyler's Trek

November 17, 2014

Tyler Rissanen was born in 2002. He spent his first seven days in the NICU. When Tyler was four weeks old, his pediatrician referred the family to George Jeffrey Children's Centre to address the weakness on his left side and concerns around the size of his head. At eight weeks old, he started receiving therapy at the Centre attended weekly for five years receiving occupational therapy, physiotherapy and speech therapy achieving almost full range on his left side. He continues to receive treatment on a monthly basis.

"We have had our ups and downs but have overcome these difficulties with positive, professional clinicians who are dedicated to the children. They are always very informative and willing to answer any question. Our family has become stronger and more supportive of each other because of the support we receive from the Centre" says Nancy Rissanen, Tyler's Mother.

Clinicians strive to maintain excellent communication between the school, teachers, school administrators, learning centre resources and any other agency that Tyler has been involved with. When he is not physically attending the Centre for therapy, clinicians prepare a home program so the family can continue to work with him in the comfort of his home.

Tyler has achieved many milestones and goals in the eleven years of being involved at George Jeffrey Children's Centre. He can ride a bike, swim independently, play soccer and cook like a pro, some of the abilities that the family was advised may never happen.

Nancy Rissanen adds "George Jeffrey Children's Centre is like a second home - a second family - for many of the children and families who attend the Centre because it offers so much more than just therapy sessions. There are always many activities, services and events that George Jeffrey Children's Centre offers for families that go beyond the call of a typical Health Service provider."
